[October 20, 2010]  EZ Fun Dance will have its first barn dance in Lincoln on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Park District, 1400 Primm Road. EZ Fun Dance is excited to bring barn dancing to Lincoln and pleased to present the authentic old-time sound of the Too Old to Be Controlled acoustic band. Caller will be Gail Hintze, who has been calling dances for years.

Just what is barn dance? In the 1800s a "new" American style of the ballroom dances of that time period became popular in rural America. The opportunity for sophisticated ballroom dances had not developed in rural areas because ballroom dances were held in elaborate buildings in big cities, by special invitation and were expensive. But everyone loves to have fun, laugh, socialize, celebrate and dance! The barn dance emerged from that desire. In rural areas there were no big, fancy ballrooms, but there were barns, many barns in which to celebrate and mimic the city dances.

Today, barn dances are still popular. All ages enjoy the barn dance because it is easy and fun. At the beginning of each dance, a demonstrator (caller) thoroughly walks through all the easy steps of the dance with the dancers. Then they call out each step as the music is played. The dances are a combination of contra-line dance, round dance, Virginia reel, folk dance, waltz and square dance. It’s fun for everyone -- singles, couples, kids, teens, seniors and families -- to participate together in barn dancing. Often people just come to watch the fun and listen to the music!

No prior dance experience needed and the old country music is great to dance as well as listen to.

Admission is $8 per person, $12 per couple and $15 per family (maximum).

Finger foods to share will be appreciated.
