The nation's weather

[October 23, 2010]  (AP)  A low pressure system will move eastward across the nation's midsection on Saturday, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to parts of the region, and possibly large hail, tornadoes and heavy rain to parts of the southern Plains.

Parts of the central Plains and Midwest are expected to get up to an inch of rain, as the system draws moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, the backside of the system will pull in cold air from the north and bring scattered snow showers to the central Rockies.

In the East, high pressure moves in to replace the low pressure system that triggered light rain and snow over the Northeast. This ridge of high pressure will allow for mostly sunny skies and highs in the 60s in the Northeast and 80s in the Southeast.

Wet and dreary conditions are expected to persist along the West Coast due to a strong low pressure system. The system will push a cold front onshore, which kicks up scattered showers with snow at high elevations of the Sierras and Cascades.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Friday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 92 degrees at Falfurrias, Texas.
