Local Special Olympics needs volunteers for Saturday

[October 27, 2010]  The annual basketball tournament for the area's Special Olympics teams is on Saturday, and help is still needed to make this event run smoothly.

The daylong tournament at the Lincoln Park District Rec Center will bring in almost two dozen teams from surrounding areas.

The tournament's organizer, Ryan Curry, who chairs the Logan County Special Olympics, says helpers are still needed to man the cafeteria, keep score and keep time on the games.

Curry said help can be for the entire day or part of the day, depending on a volunteer's schedule.

The event helps Special Olympians learn the value of competing in a sportsmanlike manner, and although scores are kept, the essence of the competition is in the efforts of the participants and not whether they won or lost the game.

In Special Olympics, everyone who competes is a winner.

Those wishing to volunteer should call Ryan Curry at 217-671-5296.
