Grand jury demands documents on Ill. grants

[October 28, 2010]  SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- Records show a federal grand jury has demanded documents on Illinois state grants, including some that went to groups with ties to a lawmaker who's running for Chicago mayor.

The Associated Press obtained subpoenas that show the grand jury asked several Illinois agencies in August for documents on how hundreds of thousands of dollars in state money was handed out.

An accompanying letter says the subpoenas are part of "an official criminal investigation," although it does not say who or what may have been the subject of the investigation.

At least some groups and people listed on the subpoenas are linked to Rickey Hendon, the assistant majority leader in the state Senate and a Chicago mayoral candidate.

Hendon isn't named in the subpoenas and hasn't been accused of wrongdoing.
