The nation's weather

[October 29, 2010] (AP) Wet conditions were forecast to persist in the West, while dry and mild fall weather would return to the East Coast on Friday.

A low pressure system off the West Coast had obtained ample moisture as it developed over the Pacific Ocean. Flow around the system was expected to push moisture and a cold front onshore, which would trigger scattered showers, with some areas seeing continual rainfall throughout the day. Heaviest rainfall was anticipated over most of northern California, with higher elevations likely to see a combination of rain and snow. Most of the Sierras was forecast to see snow levels at 6,500 feet, while the Cascades would see snow to 5,000 feet. The Pacific Northwest would experience more widespread precipitation, thus, lighter rain showers and less snowfall accumulation.

In the East, a ridge of high pressure would build from the Plains to the East Coast. This was expected to allow for warm air to move into the Plains, bringing highs back into the 50s in the northern Plains and 70s and 80s in the southern Plains. However, the leading edge of this system was forecast to pull in some cool Canadian air and bring a chilly day to the East Coast. Frost and freeze advisories were placed over the Mississippi Valley and eastward, as overnight lows might dip to near freezing temperatures. Highs would range in the 50s to 60s across the eastern U.S.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 4 degrees at Shirley Basin, Wyo., to a high of 95 degrees at Lakeland, Fla.
