[September 17, 2010]  (AP)  A series of cold fronts was forecast to kick up wet weather over the central and eastern U.S. on Friday, while another low pressure system approached the Pacific Northwest.

A low pressure system over the Great Lakes was expected to continue moving eastward, pulling a cold front with it. The system would pull offshore, but the front was expected to linger over the East Coast of the U.S. This would pull in ample moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico and allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop. The front has a history of producing 1 to 2 inches of rain, with large hail and strong, damaging winds. The Midwest, New England and Northeast would remain in the 60s and 70s. The Southeast was expected to remain hot and humid with highs in the 90s.

Behind this system, high pressure were forecast to build into the Plains and upper Midwest and pull more cool air in from central Canada. This would create another cold front that would start the day in the Dakotas and dip into the central Plains and mid-Mississippi River Valley. This front was expected to bring a chilly day to the north-central U.S., with highs in the 50s.

In the West, high pressure would start shoving eastward as a low pressure system approached from the Pacific Ocean. The system would pull in some moisture, bringing clouds with scattered showers to Oregon and Washington. Cloudy skies were expected to extend into northern California, with a few showers in the extreme northern areas of the state. Southern California would remain dry; thus, hazardous fire weather conditions were expected to persist over the southern Sierra Nevadas.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Daniel, Wyo., to a high of 108 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
