[September 22, 2010]  (AP)  A plume of tropical moisture was forecast to stream northward into the Southwest on Wednesday, triggering monsoon thunderstorms throughout the Four Corners region.

These storms were expected to be enhanced by an approaching trough in the jet stream, making the storms bring exceptionally heavy rain to some locations.

In the East, high pressure was expected to begin shifting to the east, allowing some thunderstorms that had been traversing the ridge to the north to push a little farther south into the Appalachians and New England. As night falls, the storms would likely bring some wet weather to the Mid-Atlantic as well.

The same trough that was expected to enhance thunderstorm activity in the Southwest would move through the West Coast states early in the day. This relatively dry trough would not bring much precipitation with it, only a few clouds in the interior Northwest. The trough would act to stir the atmosphere enough that the Pacific fog along the coast from California to Washington would most likely dissipate by midday.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Pinedale, Wyo., to a high of 109 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
