[September 23, 2010]  (AP)  More showers and thunderstorms were expected in the upper Midwest and Plains on Thursday, due to a strengthening low pressure system over the center of the country.

The low pressure system was expected to move northeastward from the central Rockies into the northern Plains.

Flow around the system would create a strong warm front extending eastward to the Mississippi River Valley. As the low pushed moisture northward from the Gulf of Mexico, scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast to develop along the front in the central Plains, upper Midwest and northern Plains. These storms have a history of turning severe; thus, large hail, strong damaging winds and heavy downpours were possible. Around an inch of rainfall was expected along the front, with up to 2 inches likely in area of severe storms. South of this system, warm and humid conditions were expected to persist. The northern Plains would remain in the 70s, while the southern Plains would see highs in the 80s.

In the Northeast, a slow-moving cold front was expected to finally start pushing eastward and off into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday. This would pull wet weather with it, allowing for a few patchy clouds to linger over the Northeast and New England. Highs were expected to remain in the mid- to upper 80s.

In the West, Tropical Depression Georgette moved onshore from the Gulf of California. The center of the system would remain in northeastern Mexico, but flow around it would pull moist air well into the Southwest. This was expected to bring another day of scattered showers and thunderstorms to Arizona and New Mexico. Rainfall totals would range from 0.25 to 0.75 inches. The rest of the West Coast would see another warm, dry and sunny day as high pressure prevails.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 27 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 99 degrees at Louisville, Ky.
