Home composting class offered

[April 01, 2011]  University of Illinois Extension is offering a two-day spring class in home composting basics. Participants will learn the art and science of home composting. The hands-on intensive training includes basics of indoor worm composting and outdoor composting, science of composting and educational methods practice.

The class sessions will be on April 5 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class will meet at the University of Illinois Extension Building 30 on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

Participants will also have an opportunity to practice hands-on composting in the Master Gardener compost demonstration area on April 8 from 1 to 4 pm. In addition, there will be an optional field trip on April 28. Participants will also have an opportunity to purchase a worm composting bin to use at home.

Training will be presented by U of I Extension educators Duane Friend and Jennifer Fishburn and by U of I Extension Master Gardeners. The classes will be via the University of Illinois telenet system and local computer PowerPoint presentations, allowing live discussion between the instructor and gardeners throughout Illinois.

The cost for the program is $25.
