Before the meeting began, Mayor Keith Snyder came in with a fist
full of red ink pens and gave one to each department head and
alderman. Later in the evening he would explain that he had been
visited by Busby, who asked him to distribute the pens with the
message for everyone to cut their budgets. Snyder said Busby
suggested they cut 5 percent.
Snyder said, "This is just a little reminder that Alderman Busby
is watching."
April 9 to be "Bob Shattuck Day"
Mary Shattuck, the wife of Bob Shattuck, and one of Bob's
longtime friends, Chuck Fricke, were in attendance to receive a
proclamation from the council making Saturday "Bob Shattuck Day" in
Lincoln.
Shattuck is well known to the council as the architectural
designer who has worked on many projects in the city, including the
most recent roof project for City Hall.
After the reading and passing of the resolution, Fricke spoke
briefly about the upcoming fundraiser for Shattuck, who is fighting
oral cancer.
The event, called "Comedy for a Cause," will take place Saturday
evening at the Lincoln Banquet Center and will feature comedic
entertainment as well as a live auction and silent auctions.
Fricke said donations for the auctions have poured in from local
merchants and friends of Shattuck. He noted that a fishing trip to
Canada will be one of several live auction items. There will also be
a flight to St. Louis, a 24-by-30 painted portrait donated by Sarah
Petty Photography, a signed Dick Butkus No. 51 shirt and a signed
football. He also noted that over 50 local merchants have donated
items with values ranging from $100 to $500.
Mary Shattuck spoke as well. She said that right now Bob is at an
alternative treatment center in Wheaton and that the family's
insurance will not pay for his six-week stay at the facility.
She said this is their last-ditch effort: "We're hoping he can go
there and heal naturally. It's now between him and God."
Shattuck added it was a particularly difficult time for them
because for the first two weeks, she's not allowed to visit Bob.
City renews contract with MidAmerican
By unanimous vote, MidAmerican Energy will be the provider for
city electricity for the next two years.
Waste treatment manager Bob Tackett said the Monday bid came in
at $0.0382 per kilowatt-hour, slightly higher than it was last week,
but still a significant savings over the current contract.
Tackett said that over the next two years at the sewer plant
alone, the city would see a savings of about $60,000 over the
previous two years.
