Lincoln FFA fundraiser, Mount Pulaski Legion Auxiliary, Lincoln Wrestlers, Sierra Burris and Mount Pulaski High School honor roll make Close Up

[April 05, 2011]  The Lincoln FFA will have their annual pancake and sausage breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, April 9, from 7 a.m. to noon in the Lincoln High School cafeteria. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Come out and support your local FFA chapter.

Mount Pulaski American Legion Auxiliary Unit 447 is hosting a spring brunch on Sunday, April 10. The hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Legion, 100 E. Scroggin Ave. in Mount Pulaski. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children 3-12, and children under 3 eat free. The proceeds will go to the repair and maintenance of the American Legion building and grounds.

The Lincoln Wrestlers competed in the 17th annual Litchfield Folkstyle Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, April 2. The Lincoln results were as follows:

• Austin O'Donoghue finished third in the bantam division.

• Max Koning finished second in the junior high division.

• Matt Brewer finished first in both the freshman-sophomore and junior-senior divisions

• Luke Koning finished first in the freshman-sophomore division and second in the junior-senior division.

• Thomas Bruce finished third in the junior division.

• Jonathon Beverman finished third in the junior-senior division and third in the open division.

• Zach Schlader finished third in the junior-senior division and second in the open division.

• Coach Jason Lawrence took first in the open division.

The team will be head to Washington, Ill., next Saturday to compete in the Panther Open wrestling tournament.

The 1st State Bank of Mason City and Illini Central High School are pleased to present Sierra Burris with the February Student of the Month Award. For demonstrating outstanding character, Sierra receives a $50 savings bond from 1st State Bank and a reference work appropriate to her course of study from the Illini Central High School faculty.

Sierra is the daughter of Meri and John Van Bragt and Mike Burris. Her classes this year are Creative Writing, Independent Art, Spanish 4, Foods II, Resource Management, Living Environment and Psychology.

In addition, Sierra keeps busy with a number of extracurricular activities. She is president of the senior class and of student council, treasurer of National Honor Society, secretary of Spanish Club, captain of cheerleading, a participant in the school play, and a member of the track team, where she was MVP her junior year.

As a volleyball player, Sierra has received many honors: captain of the school volleyball team, first team Sangamo all-conference, second team Tomahawk all-conference, first team in the Peoria Journal Star, second team in the Springfield Journal-Register, second team in the Bloomington Pantograph and honorable mention all-state in the News Gazette. She is the first player in Illini Central history to reach 1,000 kills. She was nominated to the IHSA All-State Academic Team.

Sierra is also a teacher's assistant.

Outside of school, Sierra is a nursery volunteer and junior deacon for the United Presbyterian Church. She helps in several community programs: recycling, delivering meals on wheels, packing community food baskets, giving blood and helping kids at Breakfast with Santa.

Next year, Sierra will be playing volleyball on a four-year scholarship at Illinois State University, where she will study to be an elementary school teacher.
