[April 15, 2011] The Emergency Food and Shelter Program board for Logan County has been advised by the program's national board to proceed with the application process for allocating EFSP funds.

At this time, however, the national board does not know when or if Congress will allocate funds for this program. If funding becomes available, the national board will notify the qualifying jurisdictions of their allocations.

The national board is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of national representatives from The Salvation Army American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities-USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and the United Way of America.

The purpose of EFSP funding is to expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

The EFSP board in Logan County includes the following mandated organizational members: American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, United Jewish Federation, United Way of Logan County, Lincoln Area Ministerial Association, homeless representatives and the Logan County Board. In addition, the local board membership includes Community Action Partnership of Central Illinois, Lincoln/Logan Food Pantry, Logan County Housing Authority, Logan County Emergency Management Agency and the city of Lincoln.

The local board will determine how EFSP funds, if any are awarded to Logan County, are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area.

  2. Have an accounting system.

  3. Practice nondiscrimination.

  4. Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food or shelter programs.

  5. If a private voluntary organization, must have a voluntary board.

Public or private voluntary organizations interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must call Rebecca Van Nydeggen at The Salvation Army Keest Center at 217-732-7890 for an application. The deadline for applications is May 2.
