[April 28, 2011]  (AP)  The intense storm system that pounded the eastern valleys on Wednesday will bring more rain, thunderstorms and chances of severe weather activity as it moves eastward Thursday.

The main low pressure system will lift northeastward across the Great Lakes into southeastern Canada, while a very active associated cold front treks toward the East Coast. A moist and unstable air mass ahead of this front will stir up numerous bands of rain and rain and thunderstorms on the Eastern Seaboard. Daytime heating will enhance instability over the area and may create some severe weather activity with damaging winds and tornadoes. Residents on the Eastern Seaboard are encouraged to monitor their local weather activity and heed watches and warnings throughout the day.

In the West, high pressure will continue to provide fairly calm and clear skies from much of the California coast through the Great Basin and Southwest. Meanwhile, a cold front will move through the Pacific Northwest and the northern Intermountain West with scattered rain showers and mountain snow.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 3 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 101 degrees at Edinburg, Texas.
