[August 01, 2011] (AP) Hot and active weather will continue throughout parts of the East on Monday.

In the South, scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist in the Carolinas as a cold front and wave of low pressure move through the region. Additional showers and thunderstorms are anticipated to the south of a nearly stationary front that will linger over the northern Southeast.

To the west of this activity, a ridge of high pressure will remain over the central Plains. This system will allow hot weather to continue from the southern and central Plains through the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic with highs in the 90s and 100s. To the north of this system, disturbances moving through the Midwest will trigger slight chances of severe weather development with damaging wind, hail and possibly tornadoes from the northern Plains into the upper Great Lakes. Additional severe weather activity with damaging wind gusts and hail is possible in the Northeast due to increased instability during the afternoon.

West of the Continental Divide, an active plume of monsoon moisture and weak disturbances from the eastern Pacific and the Gulf of Baja moving through the West will fuel more rain showers and thunderstorms from parts of southern California through areas of the Southwest and parts of the Great Basin. Thunderstorms may produce periods of heavy rain and gusty winds.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of 39 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 109 degrees at Shawnee, Okla.
