Batch, Clay hoping to join Steelers backfield

[August 08, 2011]  LATROBE, Pa. (AP) -- Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back John Clay is looking to prove the doubters wrong.

The former Wisconsin star is in camp with the defending AFC champions after going undrafted, leading some to second-guess his decision to leave the Badgers after his junior season.

Clay says he's using the criticism as motivation, and he's hoping to find a spot as a goal-line and short-yardage specialist for the Steelers.

He has plenty of competition. Fellow rookie Baron Batch has turned heads with his physical play during camp. Batch is looking to make an impact on special teams and land a spot on the roster.

Both are expected to see plenty of action when the Steelers open the preseason at Washington on Wednesday.
