UN urges probe into alleged Sudan war crimes

[August 15, 2011]  GENEVA (AP) -- The U.N. human rights office has called for a thorough investigation into alleged war crimes committed in Sudan's South Kordofan region in June.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has released a 12-page report saying the reported attacks were carried out by Sudanese security forces and elements linked to the military of neighboring South Sudan.

Many inhabitants of South Kordofan fought for the south during the African nation's decades-long civil war against the north and are ethnically linked to the south.

The U.N. report released Monday cites witnesses who claim to have seen mass graves dug by the Sudanese army dug for executed prisoners. It also cites alleged violations by members of the south's Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement.
