The nation's weather

[August 15, 2011]  (AP)  Another round of active weather will develop in the eastern third of the nation Monday as a trough of low pressure deepens over the region. This trough will support a storm system as it moves offshore from the Mid-Atlantic.

InsuranceWraparound winds associated with this storm will spread moisture back into the New England area, stirring up bands of showers with periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from parts of Massachusetts to the Gulf of Maine. Additional, lighter showers are anticipated in parts of the central Appalachians and the Mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, an associated cold front will drop across the Southeast with scattered showers and chances of thunderstorms. Finally, behind this activity, a cooler and drier air mass will follow into the Eastern Seaboard by the midweek.

To the west, fronts over the Rockies will trek eastward into the High Plains with showers and thunderstorms. Storms in the northern Plains may turn severe with damaging wind and hail.

Further west, a trough of low pressure will gradually move through the Pacific Northwest coast, bringing cooler weather and chances for some light rain.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of 35 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 107 degrees at Houston, Texas
