[August 23, 2011]  ORANGE, Calif. (AP) -- An infant who plunged from a Southern California hospital parking structure was hospitalized in very critical condition and police were searching floor-by-floor for a suspect, authorities said.

A witness called 911 after seeing the baby falling after 6 p.m. on Monday, but police haven't found an eyewitness who saw the infant go over the rail, Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams said. He said the baby fell from the second story or higher.

The boy suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a trauma center at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange for treatment.

Police had no information on the baby's identity or that of his parents. Adams said he didn't know whether the baby had been treated at the children's hospital.

Detectives were reviewing surveillance video to determine what happened and had locked down the garage to search for evidence. Video shot by a KCAL-TV news helicopter showed yellow police tape outside a garage gate where a baby blanket remained on the ground.

"It's a horrific crime," Adams said. "We obviously don't think this is an accident."

Calls to the UC Irvine Medical Center weren't immediately returned.
