[August 23, 2011] (AP) The main weather feature over the next few days will increasingly be Hurricane Irene as it moves northwestward toward Florida and the Southeast Coast. Irene is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 storm Tuesday while traversing through the Bahamas.

By Thursday, Irene will track up the east coast of Florida as a dangerous Category 3 storm on its way to a Saturday morning landfall along the coast of South Carolina. People in the track of Irene should monitor the progress of this dangerous storm and be prepared to take any precautions necessary to protect life and property.

Meanwhile, a high pressure system over the Ohio Valley will keep the Northeast dry, while the tail end of a cold front may produce some scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Southeast.

Another front will make its way through the upper Midwest, instigating another round of rain and scattered thunderstorms from Minnesota through Michigan.

Monsoon moisture will continue to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms, while the Northwest may see scattered rain.

The Plains and Southeast will rise into the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast will see temperatures in the 70s and some 80s. The Southwest will rise into the 90s and 100s, while the Northwest will see temperatures in the 70s, 80s and some 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a morning low of 32 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 107 degrees at El Centro, Calif.
