 Billed as
the state championship by the Kansas City Barbeque
Society, Up in Smoke on the Square will be an event that will draw
some of the best barbecuers on the professional competition circuit.
The event will be on Friday and Saturday, and competition organizer
Chris Graue said that competitors are still calling him. Currently
32 competitive barbecuers have signed up, and Graue said there is a
possibility of a few more making the journey to cook in downtown
Lincoln.
Graue said a cancellation of an event has kept his phone ringing
as he fields calls about the competition. The cancellation has some
barbecuers scrambling to see if they can make Lincoln's event to
work on gaining points in the yearlong competition, plus the purse
this year is $8,000.
Graue said fans of the Learning Channel will get to see Shad
Kirton, who won the series championship of the "BBQ Pitmasters"
television show and a $100,000 first prize. Kirton is the co-owner
of Smokey D's BBQ and pitmaster of the team A Boy and His BBQ.
Also coming this year is Mike Wosniak, who has won over 40 grand
championships in his career. In 2010 Wosniak won the Kansas City
Barbeque, the Kingsford Points Chase and the Jack Daniels World
Championship, to name a few.
Ron and Mary Cato from the Kansas City Barbeque Society will be
on hand for this KCBS-sanctioned event.
So whether you are an amateur outdoor cooker or consider yourself
an avid hobbyist of barbecue, this weekend on the square offers
everyone a chance to see and learn from some of the best on how to
turn that outdoor meal into a meal worth remembering -- BBQ style.
