Tales from Christian Village:
Reflections on turning 90

[August 26, 2011]  I will soon reach the age of 90. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I thought, 90 -- now that's old. Well, now that I'm almost there, I don't feel like a young chick, but I surely don't feel like an old hen.

InsuranceI feel good for the shape I'm in. When I was living alone after my husband passed away 37 years ago, I bought a two-story house with a basement. Whenever it rained hard, I had water in the basement. I fell a lot of times, keeping my neighbor busy answering my call alert button. The last time I fell, it was pretty bad, so my family decided (and I agreed) my neighbor had suffered enough, so I moved from Indiana out here to The Christian Village.

Well, folks, I'm back in Sunday school, Sunday morning and afternoon church (Tom comes with me whenever he is not preaching), Bible study, and chapel on Thursdays with retired Professor Marion Henderson teaching us about the Sermon on the Mount. Folks, I'm living and enjoying it.

Terry, my son who passed away at 50, gave me a Bible for Christmas 1998 and put a note in it. It said, "Use this book to study for your final test." I'm reading Psalms now.

We sing in church, Sunday school and chapel. I've taught them a new song, "There's Coming a Day." We all know that's true, but take one day at a time, enjoy it, thank God each day for our blessings. We have many.

We have activities here at The Christian Village, brain games to keep our minds active, Writer's Group, and three afternoons in the week we play bingo. I read a lot. The Heartsong series of books have lots of Scriptures within them.

My eyes are still good, and I'm getting new hearing aids. I don't walk but have a wheelchair that takes me where I want to go. When I want some of that "home cookin,'" the family helps to get me to it.

God has been good to me these 89 years, and I'm looking forward to the 90s. I'll just be content, enjoy life with friends and loved ones until He says different.
