Running of bulls considered in Phoenix suburb

[August 30, 2011]  CAVE CREEK, Ariz. (AP) -- A Pamplona, Spain-style running of the bulls is being considered in a Phoenix suburb, but it would have to take place without the town's support.

HardwareThe Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/nAvM13) that Cave Creek officials revoked a permit that would have sanctioned the event, slated for October.

The decision protects the town's liability but doesn't keep the project from going forward.

Mayor Vincent Francia says a running of the bulls is fitting for Cave Creek. But he says the special-event permit was revoked because promoter Phil Immordino wouldn't provide sufficient insurance coverage.

The town wants $3 million in insurance for the event, but Immordino says he can only afford $2 million in coverage and still cover other costs.

Immordino adds the bull run will be similar to but safer than the one held annually in Spain. He says it would take place in a quarter-mile arena and use rodeo bulls instead of Mexican fighting bulls.
