[August 30, 2011]  (AP)  While no notable precipitation will fall on the Northeast due to a high pressure system moving over the area, the area will still receive attention based on the torrential rainfall it has received the past few days.

Hurricane Irene dumped over 15 inches of rain on many areas from North Carolina through Maine, and it will take several days for this water to make its way downstream. In the meantime, flooding of rivers and dams is likely throughout the area, with New England being the hardest hit.

To the South, a major heat wave will continue in the southern Plains, with temperatures spiking in the 90s and 100s. Heat indexes will also rise into the triple digits in the area, so residents of New Mexico, Oklahoma and Louisiana should once again prepare for another uncomfortable day. The heat will begin to spread to the north as the week progresses, with temperatures in the 90s through the Mississippi Valley by Thursday and Friday.

Mild to warm conditions will continue in the West, with coastal areas receiving a break from the warm summer temperatures due to their proximity to water.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the upper Midwest will see similar temperatures. The Northwest will rise into the 70s and 80s as well, but the Southwest will see temperatures in the 90s and 100s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a morning low of 32 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 109 degrees at Houston, Texas.
