[December 01, 2011]  EMDEN -- The Emden Historical Society invites parents and children from preschool ages through fourth grade to share in a traditional German observance of St. Nicholas Eve on Monday at 6 p.m. at the Emden Community House basement in downtown Emden.

HardwareGet a taste of this longtime practice and custom as Emden celebrates their nearly 100 percent German heritage. St. Nicholas will be on hand to greet the kids and have fun.

Saint Nicholas was a historic fourth-century saint who had a reputation for secret gift-giving, and thus became the model for Santa Claus. The historical Saint Nicholas is remembered and revered among Catholic and Orthodox Christians. He is also honored by various Anglican and Lutheran churches.

The event is being coordinated by Emden resident Sylvia Klokkenga, 217-376-3474.
