[December 03, 2011]  LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) -- Authorities in Hawaii say police shot and killed a 21-year-old knife-wielding man during a rampage in which he fatally stabbed a neighbor and attacked three other people.

The Kauai Police Department says the violence began when the man allegedly attacked his 83-year-old grandfather Friday in Waimea Valley.

They say he then fatally stabbed a 68-year-old female neighbor. Nearby, he allegedly attacked a 63-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman outside their home.

The police say the officer told the man to stop, but the man allegedly continued to attack and the officer fired. The suspect then attempted to run away but collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three survivors are being treated at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital for wounds that do not appear life-threatening.

The attacker's name wasn't immediately released.
