Zion Lutheran Lady Eagles win tournament

[December 07, 2011]  The Zion Lutheran School Lady Eagles were the champions of the 16-team Edwardsville-Trinity Lutheran School Tip-off Tournament for the second consecutive year.

ZLS won their first game of the tournament on Friday by defeating Nashville-Okawville 35-19.

Lexie Groves led the Eagles with 13 points. Other scorers were Hailie Williams with nine, Rachel Lockenour and Lizzie Ford with four each, Anna Sielaff with three, and Anna Walters with two.

The Lady Eagles defeated Chester-St. John's Lutheran in the quarterfinal game by the score of 37-21. The leading scorers for Zion were Williams with 13 and Groves with 10. Also scoring for ZLS were Brooklyn Hermes with six, Ford with four, Sielaff with two and Mya Roberts with two.

The host school, Edwardsville-Trinity Lutheran, challenged the Eagles in the third round. Zion Lutheran prevailed in a very close matchup for a one-point decision of 37-36. The leading scorers for Zion were Groves with 12 and Williams with nine. Others scorers were Hermes with four, Ford with four, Walters with four, Lockenour with two and Sielaff with two.

The tournament championship game featured the Lady Eagles vying with Belleville-Zion Lutheran for the title. ZLS claimed their tournament back-to-back championship by winning 37-29. Leading the Eagles in scoring were Williams with 14, Groves with nine and Sielaff with eight. Hermes added four points and Ford had two.
