'Singing Valentines' to ring out in Lincoln area

[February 08, 2011]  They'll be saying "I love you!" in song next week -- and they'll be leaving hundreds of lucky romantics speechless. On Monday, Feb. 14, barbershop quartets will fan out across the Lincoln and Logan County area to deliver "Singing Valentines" to those special sweethearts.

InsuranceSounds of love will ring out in offices, restaurants, schools and homes throughout central Illinois. Wherever they appear, they'll draw a crowd -- and sometimes a few tears. The quartets belong to the Land of Lincoln Chorus, the local chapter of the 30,000-member Barbershop Harmony Society, headquartered in Nashville, Tenn. Chapters nationwide celebrate this holiday by singing. Additional information can be found at www.singingvalentines.com.

A Singing Valentine includes a quartet dressed in tuxedoes singing two songs, a card signed in your name, a rose in vase and a digital photo. Men and women alike have been on the receiving end -- with moving results.

"It's especially fun to deliver a Singing Valentine from a woman to her husband or boyfriend," says Greg Weickart of the Land of Lincoln Chorus. "Last year, my quartet went to an auto mechanics shop, and caught a guy going off shift. He was stunned. His co-workers gathered around and were ready to start razzing him -- until they saw the tears welling up in his eyes. It was truly a valentine he’ll never forget"
