Historian Eric Foner honored for Lincoln biography

[February 11, 2011]  NEW YORK (AP) -- Award-winning historian Eric Foner has received a new honor, the Lincoln Prize, for his biography about the 16th president's views on slavery.

Foner will rHardwareeceive $50,000 for "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery." He is best known for "Reconstruction," published in 1988 and winner of the Bancroft Prize.

The Lincoln award was founded in 1994 by the nonprofit Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Previous winners include Doris Kearns Goodwin and Ken Burns.
