[February 12, 2011]  At 3:30 a.m. Friday, area fire departments in mutual aid responded to a home fire at 1518 Broadway in Lincoln.

InsuranceAccording to Lincoln fire Chief Mark Miller, the 7-year-old daughter in the home was awakened by a smoke detector and alerted family members that a fire was in progress.  Due to the young girl's actions, the family was able to leave the home with no injuries.

Miller said the home was a total loss.

Agencies responding besides the Lincoln Fire Department were Lincoln Rural Fire, Atlanta Fire Department, Mount Pulaski Fire Department, Lincoln Police Department, the city streets and alley crew, and Logan County Paramedics.

Miller said the fire during a cold night held its own challenges, including finding the street drains to allow the water to drain off. "It was an ice rink out there" he said.

Miller said the concerted effort by everyone involved was appreciated by him and his department.

The chief also noted that the home having a smoke alarm was essential to the family being safe.

"Fire prevention pays off," said Miller.

The displaced family has family in the city to help them, said Miller.

More on the blaze and its aftermath will be reported.
