 Each year legislators are given eight scholarships to award that
cover full tuition at any state university. The cost of these
scholarships is absorbed by the school that the recipient attends.
"Again this year I have made the tough decision not to give out
General Assembly scholarships," Bomke said. "After years of
underfunding, our universities have been stretched too thin. With
the financial troubles of Illinois universities, it would be
irresponsible to pass along the cost of these scholarships to them."
Most years Bomke's office receives around 100 applications for
the eight scholarships. For those who receive the scholarships they
are a blessing, but for those who do not, they may face increased
tuition rates to help their schools cover the cost of the
scholarships.
"It's simply not the right year or fiscal climate to give out
these scholarships," Bomke said.
