[January 03, 2011]  (AP)  Wet weather in California was forecast to begin winding down Monday as the low pressure system near the central California coast dropped southeastward.

HardwareThe system was expected to trigger more coastal and valley rain as well as high-elevation snowfall in the southern part of California. By Monday morning, the southern Sierra and Tehachapi mountains were expected to see snow totals ranging from 6 to 12 inches at and above 4,000 feet and from 1 to 3 feet in the high country. High pressure would return drier and fairer weather conditions to the state Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in the Midwest, a weak system from central Canada was forecast to trek through the northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley. While this system was expected to bring scattered snow showers, it would not have adequate moisture to produce any significant snowfall. Light snow showers were expected to reach the Great Lakes late Monday night into Tuesday.

In the East, showery weather in Florida and near the coastal areas of New England and the Mid-Atlantic was expected to taper off as the cold front affecting the area exited into the Atlantic. Cyclonic winds were forecast to aid in the development of more lake-effect showers downwind of the Great Lakes through the afternoon.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of minus 25 degrees at Gunnison, Colo., to a high of 81 degrees at Fort Myers Airport in Florida.
