[January 05, 2011]  CHICAGO (AP) -- A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany, made an unscheduled stop in Canada due to a communications malfunction.

HardwareUnited spokesman Rahsaan Johnson says Flight 940 was diverted to Toronto late Monday and landed safely at Pearson International Airport. Johnson says the plane was still in contact with the ground, but that the pilot elected to divert the flight rather than cross the Atlantic Ocean while experiencing a communications problem.

The Boeing 777 was carrying 241 passengers and 14 crew members. Johnson says United flew them back to Chicago on another plane and put them up in hotel rooms overnight. He says they'll resume their flight to Germany on Tuesday.
