According to Chief Ken Greenslate, the statistics may be reflective
of the current economy. For example, during the course of the year
several people were arrested for committing large numbers of
burglaries and thefts from vehicles.
"Despite numbers being up and the Lincoln Police Department
continuing to work with reduced staffing levels, the members of the
department constantly strive to make Lincoln a safer community,"
said Greenslate.
He went on to explain how all of the officers have had to step up
their crime investigation efforts due to staffing shortages.
"The reduced staffing levels have eliminated all specialty
positions, such as the community police officer, the juvenile
officer and the drug enforcement officer. We are also working with
one less detective. Most of these reduced positions have
traditionally been proactive in trying to reduce crime," Greenslate
said. "In 1999, the Lincoln police had a total of 29 officers. Our
current staffing is 24 officers.
"The increased case numbers and the additional time it takes to
investigate those cases just reinforce how busy the members of the
Lincoln Police Department were in 2010. I am extremely proud of
their work and their service and dedication to this community."
The Lincoln Police Department wishes everyone a safe 2011.
