[January 10, 2011]  At the city council's Dec. 14 committee-of-the-whole meeting, Mayor Keith Snyder explained to council members a Reader's Digest-sponsored contest that has the potential to bring some much-needed cash into city coffers.

HardwareHe jokingly said that in typical Illinois fashion he had voted for our fine city three times.

However, the fact of the matter is, he could have voted 10 times the first day and an additional 10 times daily thereafter until the end of the contest.

The Reader's Digest "We Hear You America" contest offers a website where folks can go online and "cheer" for their favorite city. The contest includes a new vehicle and expense-paid "road trip" for one lucky voter and approximately $5,000,000 in prizes to a number of cities across America.

As of Friday night, the city of Lincoln was ranked 323rd with only 347 votes.

Surprisingly, the tiny community of Fairbury, which is in Livingston County and boasts a population of less than 4,000, is ranked second with 153,562 votes. If they maintain their second-place status, they will be the winners of $25,000 cash from Reader's Digest.

Going online to vote or cheer for our city is a relatively simple process. First, the website does ask for some voter information: name, address and e-mail address. After filling in those boxes, there are checked boxes below asking the registrant if they would like to receive e-mails from Reader's Digest. Those boxes can be "un-checked" if desired.

After the initial registration, additional visits to the website ask that the voter log in with their e-mail address only. This login constitutes the individual entries into the drawing for the new car.

After logging in and cheering, voters also have the opportunity to write a few comments about their town and offer some suggestions as to how the money might be spent, should their town win.

The contest will end on Feb. 7, which means there is still plenty of time to vote for our city and give us a chance at a $40,000 grand prize.
