[January 13, 2011]  (AP)  Expect diminishing snow showers across the Northeast and New England on Thursday, as a strong winter storm moves away from the region.

A strong low pressure system that brought heavy snow to Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine will push off the East Coast on Thursday. Only a few snow showers will linger into the morning hours, but accumulation will be light.

Flow around this system will create an eastward flow over the Great Lakes, which will pick up ample moisture and trigger more lake-effect snow across the eastern shores of the upper and lower Great Lakes. Expect periods of heavy, wet snow with accumulations between 3 to 5 inches over northeastern New York state, while western Michigan, northern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania and northern Wisconsin will see between 1 to 2 inches of new snow.

At the same time, a large ridge of high pressure builds in from the West. This will push cold Canadian air across the central and Midwestern U.S. Temperatures will range from 20 to 35 degrees below seasonable, with highs across the Ohio and Tennessee valleys ranging in the 20s.

In the West, more wintry weather is anticipated as a low pressure system moves onshore and pushes a cold front through the Pacific Northwest. This front will kick up widespread rain showers that will stretch into northern California. Expect snow to develop across the Cascades and northern Sierras, as well as the northern Rockies and Intermountain West as the system pushes eastward throughout the day.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of minus 27 degrees at Hettinger, N.D., to a high of 71 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
