[January 14, 2011]  The Lincoln Writers Club meets Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Alumni Hall at Lincoln College.

Topic for articles: List Candy Bars and use them in a story, or choose your own topic.

Welcome to all writers who would like to join.

The Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society will meet Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at 114 N. Chicago St. The public is welcome. Bill Timm of Hartsburg will speak about "Stillman Valley." Stillman Valley was the first battle of the Black Hawk War, the only war fought on Illinois soil. Timm's third great-grandfather, John Giles Adams, "died a gruesome death at Stillman Valley."

On Tuesday, Jan. 25, there will be a special evening of fellowship and outreach for Lincoln Christian Church. Lincoln Christian has rented the Laughlin Center at Lincoln Christian University so everyone can be together in one place on one evening. They have also catered in the meal so no one has to worry about preparing food that night. Dinner will begin at 6.

This will be one of those events people will talk about for a long time. The night consists of the catered dinner, fellowship with friends and family, laughter, and comedy by one of Illinois most popular comedians, Rex Havens.

Havens takes the heart of the world around each of us, applies his own gentle combination of logic, bemusement and insanity, and offers it back to his audience in a way that is engaging, thoughtful and hilarious. A former college professor who made the unusual transition to the standup comedy stage, Rex has always believed that laughter is the best defense against a confusing and challenging world.

The cost is only $10 a person, $8 for children under 10 years of age. Lincoln Christian Church will soon announce a way to purchase an entire table for your list of guests and friends.

You can purchase your tickets at any of the morning worship services or at the church office during the week. The church is giving its families the first opportunity for the tickets, before they are available to the community.

Farm Credit Services of Illinois is increasing the number of $1,000 scholarships being provided this year to 25. Another new feature of the program is that the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences has offered to provide a $1,000 scholarship match to any student selected as a 2011 Farm Credit Scholar who enrolls this fall in the College of ACES at the University of Illinois.

The scholarship application deadline is Friday, Feb. 28. High school seniors who plan to study an agricultural-related curriculum at any college or university and who reside in the southern 60 Illinois counties served by Farm Credit Services of Illinois are eligible to apply.
