[January 18, 2011]  WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Nobel literature laureate Wislawa Szymborska has been awarded Poland's highest honor in recognition of her contribution to her country's culture.

HardwarePresident Bronislaw Komorowski honored Szymborska, 87, with the Order of the White Eagle during a ceremony Monday at the Wawel Castle in the southern city of Krakow, where she lives.

The citation honors the 1996 Nobel laureate for her "illustrious contributions to the national culture and outstanding literary work."

Szymborska's seemingly simple verses deal with the profound or tragic in life through small details of daily existence.
