The Maple Club was at capacity or close to it Monday morning as members of the community came to celebrate the birthday of one of America's greatest civil rights leaders.

Lincoln College President Jonathan Astroth gave the keynote address and told of his experiences witnessing racial bigotry while a minor league baseball player in the South.

The Rev. Glenn Shelton advised those gathered that the scholarship was renamed to the Joyce Kinzie, Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship in memory of Kinzie, who was active in civil rights her entire life.

Kinzie died this past fall, and both emcee Gary Davis and Shelton talked of how she and her efforts for social justice would be missed but never forgotten.
