Ill. Dept. of Veterans' Affairs has Logan County contacts

[January 19, 2011]  SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs has veteran service officers, known as VSOs, located throughout Illinois. They are subject matter experts on federal, state and local benefits and programs available for the state's 1.3 million veterans.

InsuranceThe department encourages all Illinois veterans to "Get to Know Your VSO." VSOs provide accurate, up-to-date information, answer questions, and assist with paperwork and filing claims for federal, state and local benefits, completely free of charge.

Some of the assistance provided by the service officers:

  • Compensation benefits and document assistance -- Combat and service-related bonus payments and compensation, DD214 certificates.

  • Survivor and burial benefits -- Grave registration, grave markers.

  • Educational benefits -- GI Bill, Troops to Teachers, scholarships.

  • Employment benefits -- Employment preference, Jobs for Vets program.

  • Real estate and permits -- Homestead and disabled veterans' standard homestead exemptions, adapted housing exemptions, camping and admissions fees, hunting and fishing licenses.

  • Referral assistance -- Facilitating access to federal VA health care and counseling services.
