SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Department
of Veterans' Affairs has veteran service officers, known as VSOs,
located throughout Illinois. They are subject matter experts on
federal, state and local benefits and programs available for the
state's 1.3 million veterans.
|
The department encourages
all Illinois veterans to "Get to Know Your VSO." VSOs provide
accurate, up-to-date information, answer questions, and assist with
paperwork and filing claims for federal, state and local benefits,
completely free of charge. Some of the assistance provided
by the service officers:
-- Combat and
service-related bonus payments and compensation, DD214
certificates.
Survivor and
burial benefits -- Grave registration, grave markers.
Educational
benefits -- GI Bill, Troops to Teachers, scholarships.
Employment
benefits -- Employment preference, Jobs for Vets program.
Real estate and
permits -- Homestead and disabled veterans' standard
homestead exemptions, adapted housing exemptions, camping and
admissions fees, hunting and fishing licenses.
Referral assistance -- Facilitating
access to federal VA health care and counseling services.
"Veteran service officers are always there to advocate and assist
Illinois veterans with receiving the benefits they have earned,"
said IDVA Director Dan Grant. "I encourage all Illinois veterans to
take advantage of this free service and 'Get to Know Your VSO'!"
