[January 20, 2011]  (AP)  Snow that continued in the central Plains through Wednesday night will spread eastward into the mid-Mississippi Valley and the Ohio Valley through Thursday afternoon as a trough of low pressure from the West approaches the region.

Light to modest snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected throughout much of the region, while heavier bands of snow may lead to accumulations of 6 to 7 inches.

Meanwhile, to the north, a strong arctic front will drop through the Midwest with a very cold air mass. This disturbance will create periods of blowing and drifting snow and lowered visibilities for the morning commute. Expect bitter cold temperatures and dangerously low wind chills from 25 to 35 below zero by Thursday morning in the upper Midwest. Areas from northeast Missouri to west-central Illinois should expect wind chill values of 10 to 15 below zero late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

In the East, Canadian high pressure will bring a brief window of dry, yet cold weather to the Northeast on Thursday. To the south, drier weather and less cloud coverage is expected over most of the Florida Peninsula as a cold front drops southeastward. A few showers, thunderstorms and periods of locally heavy rainfall may develop in the southern portion of the peninsula through the afternoon.

Elsewhere, a disturbance will bring rain and snow to the northern Pacific Northwest, while high pressure provides calm weather conditions across the West.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of minus 24 degrees at Aberdeen, S.D., to a high of 84 degrees at Hollywood, Fla.
