[January 21, 2011]  A benefit for Josh Short is planned for Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 217 Limit St. in Lincoln.

Josh recently spent four weeks in an intensive care unit following a brain aneurysm and is unable to work. Josh and his wife, Chrissy, have two small children and another baby on the way.

The benefit is to help Josh and his family with medical costs and other expenses while he is recovering.

The event will be from 4 to 10 p.m. There will be food, a 50-50 drawing, DJ, bake sale and silent auction. Food available will include pulled pork, homemade potato salad, baked beans and chips.

Among the many items to be auctioned are four Chicago Blackhawks tickets, a whole hog, an appliance from McEntire's, a wide variety of baskets and gift certificates from businesses and individuals all around the community (and many more throughout central Illinois), an autographed Illini basketball, and so much more!

For more information or if you wish to donate, contact Jennifer Woodhall-Malerich at 217-750-2239 or j_chuckle@yahoo.com.

Dillon Leslie, a senior at Lincoln High School and a building trades student at Lincolnland Technical Education Center, was selected as the Springfield Area Home Builders Association Student of the Month for his excellent work ethic, great attitude and the excellent job he has done with construction in his career in the building trades class.

Dillon was a part of the 2009-2010 group that built last year's project house that was sold at the end of the year. This year, he has played a vital role in constructing the new Humane Society of Logan County facility being built just off Route 66.

Dillon plans on continuing his education in construction management in college next year.

Dillon and his family have been invited to attend a scholarship dinner in May where the SAHBA will announce their student of the year, selected from among the monthly winners. The student chosen as student of the year wins a $1,000 scholarship to be applied toward their college education.

Great job, Dillon!

Attention, all parents of high school students: Lincoln Community High School will host a FAFSA Completion Workshop at the school's computer lab on Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The FAFSA is an online application that all college-bound students must submit in order to obtain financial aid. LCHS will have a financial aid professional available to help students and parents complete the application and answer questions about financial aid.

Parents may attend the workshop at their convenience or call the counseling office at LCHS, 217-732-4131, ext. 235, to make an appointment.

All college-bound students and their parents are welcome and invited to attend.

SPRINGFIELD -- Students who will be attending state universities in Illinois and are interested in applying for the General Assembly Scholarship program must submit their applications to the office of state Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, by March 1. Students whose permanent address is within the 44th District are eligible.

Eight one-year tuition waivers for fall 2011 and spring and summer 2012 are available to undergraduate or graduate students who will be attending state universities, with scholarships specifically designated for nursing, agriculture, and a veteran or the child of a veteran.

A panel of community and education leaders will evaluate applications and select scholarship recipients. Brady will not be involved in the decision-making process.

Information about the program and applications are available at http://brady.senategop.net/scholarship-program.

All materials should be mailed to the senator's office, 2203 Eastland Drive, Suite 3, Bloomington, IL 61704. The office phone number is 309-664-4440.

Notification of scholarship awards will be made in the summer of 2011.
