[January 22, 2011]  In a year marked by continuing economic challenges, many central Illinois families are continuing to struggle with job losses and job changes. Many workers have been able to find employment after long periods of unemployment and retraining, but now they must commute longer distances from home. The need for transportation is underscored as qualified workers have had to forgo full-time employment in cities outside Lincoln due to lack of a reliable vehicle.

The Salvation Army of Logan County provides a variety of assistance programs to heads of household in financial hardship, with a focus on recovery rather than long-term dependency. The agency has announced the 2011 Wheels to Work program, which will facilitate access to used vehicles for heads of household for transportation to work.

Used vehicles may be donated to The Salvation Army by community members. Donors may take a tax deduction for the charitable gift given to the nonprofit agency. The donor must secure the documentation establishing the fair market value of any donated vehicle for IRS documentation purposes. The donor must also provide documentation that the title and registration of the donated vehicle are free of any liens or encumbrances.

The Salvation Army agrees to accept donated vehicles in running and serviceable condition as determined by The Salvation Army and its duly authorized agents licensed to perform automotive assessment and repair. The Salvation Army reserves the right not to accept vehicles for donation that cannot be brought into running and serviceable condition.

The Salvation Army will determine the recipient of a donated Wheels to Work used vehicle. Consideration will be given to factors such as but not limited to: recipient's employment status, location of recipient's residence and distance from workplace, number in household, annual household income, and proof that the recipient has a valid Illinois driver's license in order to insure and operate the vehicle legally. Recipients must be registered clients of The Salvation Army, provide documentation of financial hardship and comply with Wheels to Work program requirements.
