[July 01, 2011]  The National Weather Service in Lincoln issued a heat advisory statement at 3:40 a.m. Friday as dangerous heat and humidity is expected this afternoon.

The forecast indicates that strong upper-level high pressure will build eastward into Illinois. Increasing amounts of heat and moisture will result in heat index values over 105 over much of central Illinois west of Illinois 55.

A heat advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. today for the counties of Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton, Tazewell, McLean, Schuyler, Mason, Logan, Cass, Menard, Scott, Morgan and Sangamon, including the cities of Galesburg, Peoria, Bloomington, Normal, Havana, Lincoln, Jacksonville and Springfield.

Timing: High levels of heat and humidity are likely across the area from midday until sunset.

Temperature: While air temperatures reach the mid-90s, dewpoints well into the 70s will result in heat index values of 105 to 110 degrees during the afternoon hours.

Impacts: Heat stress will be possible, especially if you spend a significant amount of time outdoors or are involved in any strenuous outdoor activity.

Precautionary and preparedness actions:

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles.

To reduce risk during outdoor activity, take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heatstroke is an emergency -- call 911.
