[July 15, 2011]  MOUNT PULASKI -- Two mainstays of the Burgrabe's Eagles pitching corps put the brakes on the recent losing streak and the Eagles swept Mount Pulaski in Mount Pulaski, after losing the last three of their last four games. The Eagles were aided by fielding a full team that resulted in a much improved defensive effort.

In the first game, Mount Pulaski scored one run in the first, and both teams were scoreless in the second inning.

In the third inning, the Eagles broke the game open. Seven Eagles scored on four walks along with an RBI single by Alexis Van Hook, ground-out RBIs from Sydney Johnson and Grace Skelton, and two-RBI singles by Gracie Hemenway and Jazzminn Morecraft. Mount Pulaski scored two runs in the third, aided by a passed ball third strike and four walks.

The Eagles picked up another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Johnson. Mount Pulaski did not score in the bottom of the inning.

Misc

The Eagles added two insurance runs in the fifth on a single by Johnson, an RBI double from Emery Wieber and a RBI grounder by Katlyn Helton. Mount Pulaski scored a run in the fifth, but the threat was extinguished on a great defensive play by Wieber on a liner to short.

The final score for the first game was 10-4.

Morecraft faced 24 batters and held Mount Pulaski hitless, striking out nine and scattering the runs scored.

The Eagles opened the second game by batting around the lineup. Six Eagles walked and runs were driven home on a RBI single by Van Hook, a two-RBI single by Skelton, a two-RBI double by Morecraft and a three-RBI triple by Johnson that ended the inning with eight Eagles scoring. Mount Pulaski scored one in the bottom half on one hit.

Seven Eagles scored in the second inning on five walks, an RBI single by Wieber, two RBIs from Helton, a two-RBI single by Morecraft, an RBI from Mya Roberts and an RBI double by Johnson. Mount Pulaski failed to score in the bottom of the second, in part due to an unassisted double play at third base by Johnson.

In the third inning, three more Eagles scored on a single by Curry, an RBI single by Hemenway, an RBI from Skelton and an RBI single by Morecraft. With the score 18-1, Mount Pulaski conceded the game.

Heather Curry's outing was the equal to the no-hitter from Morecraft. Of the 14 hitters she faced, Curry walked only two and never went to a count greater than two balls to every other batter, with just one earned run allowed.

Prior to the game, Morecraft and Curry were challenged to be leaders of the team and step up after the tailspin the Eagles were in. They responded to the challenge as did the entire team.

The combined box score summary for the Eagles for Games 13 and 14 on the season:
