In the first game, the Eagles opened the scoring with four runs
behind three consecutive walks and back-to-back two-RBI singles by
Alexis Van Hook and Jazzminn Morecraft. The Cougars plated three in
the home half behind four hits and two walks, but Eagles starter
Grace Skelton (2-1) struck out the final batter of the inning with
the bases loaded. In the second inning, the bases were loaded on
two walks and then a single by Mya Roberts. Heather Curry and Sydney
Johnson each brought home a run on grounders to the right side of
the infield. The Cougars scored three more in the home half on four
walks from Skelton, who then gave way to Morecraft. Morecraft walked
two but induced the last two outs of the inning.
The final inning saw the Eagles explode for eight runs and
batting around. Key blows were a single by Van Hook, an RBI fly-out
by Danielle Burgrabe, a two-RBI double by Brooklyn Hermes, an RBI
single by Kylee Foster, a single by Roberts, an RBI single by Curry,
a two-RBI single by Johnson and an RBI single from Gracie Hemenway.
The Cougars managed to load the bases, but the threat was stopped by
a defensive gem, an unassisted double play at first by Johnson, who
then followed that up by catching a liner for the final out of the
game.
Skelton allowed four hits and struck out three in the first game,
and Morecraft did not allow a hit, running her streak to six innings
over the course of three games without allowing a hit.
The second game began with the Eagles scoring a run in the first
on a single from Johnson and an RBI single from Morecraft. The
Cougars scored three to take the lead on four singles.
In the second inning, the Eagles scored six runs, behind four
walks, a two-RBI single by Burgrabe and a grand slam by Johnson.
Mason City responded with walks to the first two hitters. The Eagles
catcher, Kalyn Roberts, was using her defensive skills to grab the
pitch to be ready to gun down to third in the event of a steal.
After a strikeout, several members of the crowd took exception to
Roberts' play and accused the umpire of allowing catcher
interference. At one point, a mother screamed repeatedly to her
daughter to hit Roberts with the bat. Roberts held her ground, but
ultimately the Cougars scored three runs in the inning after two
hits.

In the third inning, the Eagles failed to score, despite a double
from Hermes. A walk and an RBI single by the Cougars and the game
was tied 7-7.
The final inning was called by the umpires due to time limits.
The Eagles were able to fill the bases after a walk to Foster, a
sharp single by Burgrabe, and Katie Hunsley was then hit by a pitch.
With one out and the top of the order up, the Eagles were unable to
score. With the game in the balance, Curry walked the first two
hitters she faced. She then struck out the next two batters. Another
walk was allowed. After running the count 3-2 with the bases loaded,
Curry buried the next one for a called strike from the same umpire
who did not let the taunts of the crowd deter him from making the
call.
The Eagles finish the season 11-4-1 and were the winners of the
Lincoln Park District League for 2011.
