Burgrabe's Eagles sweep Mount Pulaski in 2 comeback victories

[June 02, 2011]  Burgrabe's Eagles ran their record to 3-0 in the softball league for 11-12-year-old girls with a doubleheader sweep of Mount Pulaski at Breezy Field in Lincoln. Both games featured the Eagles scoring in the last frame to get the wins, and both wins were earned by Heather Curry (3-0) in relief of starter Grace Skelton.

In game one, after holding Mount Pulaski scoreless, Grace Hemenway walked, Mya Roberts walked, Brooklyn Hermes had an RBI single, and Sydney Johnson advanced Roberts across the plate with a hustling play to first on a passed ball. Then Danielle Burgrabe walked; Curry, Jazzminn Morecraft, Kimberly Rhoades and Katie Hunsley all drew RBI walks; and Skelton had an RBI single to close the scoring in the first.

Mount Pulaski plated six to open the second inning. The Eagles' second inning began with a single by Alexis Van Hook, an RBI double by Hemenway and an RBI groundout by Roberts.

Mount Pulaski took the lead in the third inning after scoring four runs. Burgrabe singled and scored the tying run in the bottom half, being driven in by Kylee Foster. Curry scored the go-ahead run with an RBI walk to Skelton.

Curry struck out the side in the top of the fourth inning to preserve the 11-10 win.

Game two opened with Mount Pulaski scoring three runs. In the home half of the first, Hemenway led off with a home run. Then Hermes doubled, Morecraft singled and Curry hit a three-run homer. After that, Johnson and Burgrabe singled, Kalyn Roberts walked, Van Hook drove in one with a single and was followed by a two-RBI single by Skelton.

After allowing two hits and a run in the second inning, Skelton struck out the side. The second inning for the Eagles featured Foster and Hunsley singling, but Foster was gunned down at third base. Mya Roberts drove in Hunsley on an RBI groundout. Hemenway tripled but was stranded at third.

Mount Pulaski plated three more in the third inning. Morecraft doubled in the bottom of the third, followed by a single by Curry and an RBI groundout by Johnson.

Mount Pulaski kept battling back and plated two runs in the fourth inning, tying the score at 9-9. In the bottom of the fourth, Kalyn Roberts walked and scored on a double by Van Hook, Skelton walked and was singled home by Foster, Hunsley and Hemenway walked, followed by an RBI walk to Rhoades. The time limit then put an end to the action with the Eagles prevailing 12-9.

Pitching totals over the two games showed Skelton pitching five innings, striking out 10 and allowing six hits, and Curry pitching three innings, striking out five and allowing five hits.

  • Alexis Van Hook: 3 for 4, double, 1 run scored, 2 RBIs

  • Heather Curry: 2 for 2, home run, 3 runs scored, 4 RBIs

  • Grace Skelton: 2 for 2, 1 run scored, 4 RBIs

  • Mya Roberts: 0 for 2, 1 run scored, 2 RBIs

  • Kimberly Rhoades: 0 for 2, 2 RBIs

  • Kylee Foster: 2 for 4, 1 run scored, 2 RBIs

Burgrabe's Eagles will try to remain undefeated in a home doubleheader on June 8 against Mason City.
