[June 06, 2011]  Cool cars, fabulous food and he dedication of a new Lincoln Byway interpretive panel along Route 66 will all be part of the Route 66 Association of Illinois 2011 Motor Tour and Hall of Fame Banquet as the tour passes through Logan County.

Several special events connected with this year's tour will take place in Logan County. They are open to the public, as well as to those already signed up for the motor tour.

A dedication ceremony for the first of Atlanta's two Route 66 National Scenic Byway interpretive panels is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday in the Atlanta Route 66 Park, at the corner of Race and Arch streets. The panel interprets the ups and downs of the famous road as it affected Atlanta over the years.

Among those expected to attend the dedication are Paul Adams and his wife, Marian. Paul Adams' voice can be heard on the new panel's audio element.

The annual Route 66 Hall of Fame Banquet will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday on the campus of Lincoln College. This year's inductees into the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame will be announced during the evening's festivities.

Chef Warren Wendlandt, who is well-known and revered by area diners, will prepare the buffet. Hungry road warriors can choose from roast beef, chicken strips, a chili bar, codfish, salads, fruit, shrimp, jello and desserts. Iced tea, coffee and water are also included.

A cash bar with beer and wine will be provided by members of the Lincoln Knights of Columbus.

Banquet tickets are $20 per adult, $10 per child age 6 to 11 and free for those age 5 and younger. Reservations may be made by calling the Abraham Lincoln Tourism Bureau at 217-732-8687. The reservation deadline is Wednesday.

The tour, which is scheduled June 10-12, will travel from Romeoville to Litchfield. In Lincoln, participants will tour the Heritage in Flight Museum on Sunday morning. More tour information is available at www.il66assoc.org.

The 2011 tour theme is "Peace, Love and the Mother Road." The tour will honor the late Bob Waldmire, whose work and lifestyle have become iconic memories of the road he traveled and loved.

An artist, ecologist, vegetarian and a true Route 66 ambassador, Waldmire was also known as the Mother Road's resident hippie. His artwork, writings and conversations with those he met revealed his lifelong love affair with Route 66.

Waldmire was posthumously inducted into the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame in 2010.

Another upcoming Route 66 event in Logan County will be the dedication of a new Route 66 Scenic Byway wayside exhibit at the world's largest covered wagon, donated by Larry Van Bibber and located near the Best Western Lincoln Inn on Old Route 66. The wayside exhibit will be dedicated this summer, as soon as winter and spring storm damage to the wagon is repaired.
