[June 15, 2011]  ISTANBUL (AP) -- Turkey says Angelina Jolie wants to visit Syrian refugees who have fled violence and are camped out on the Turkish side of the border.

HardwareForeign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal said Wednesday that an application to visit the refugees has been made on behalf of the Hollywood celebrity and goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Unal says the application is being assessed.

Turkey says more than 8,500 Syrians have fled to Turkey to escape a crackdown on an anti-government uprising.

In April, Jolie traveled to Tunisia during its refugee crisis as thousands fled from its war-torn neighbor, Libya.
