[June 16, 2011]  Burgrabe's Eagles suffered their first loss of the season in a doubleheader split with the Mason City Cougars at Breezy Field in Lincoln on Wednesday night. The Eagles won the opener 10-5 but lost the nightcap 10-8.

In the first game, the Cougars opened the scoring with two runs and had the bases full when the third out was recorded. The Eagles tied the score on a walk to Heather Curry, who was driven home on a single by Sydney Johnson. Johnson was able to score on a thrown ball to second base by the Cougars in an attempt to catch Kalyn Roberts stealing after Roberts drew a walk.

The Cougars were blanked in the second. In the bottom half, Katie Hunsley was hit by a pitch, Kimberly Rhoades and Curry walked, followed by a passed ball and errant throw on a strikeout to Brooklyn Hermes that scored Hunsley. Jazzminn Morecraft followed with a single that scored three Eagles.

Mason City was held scoreless in the third inning. The Eagles scored four runs without a hit on five walks and three hit batters in the bottom of the third.

In the top half of the final inning, the Cougars scored three runs without a hit on three walks and two hit batters, and the Eagles had the win.

Morecraft (2-0) recorded the win for the Eagles. She gave up two hits while striking out one in three innings. Rhoades did not allow a hit in relief, and Curry earned the save by striking out one hitter in two-thirds of an inning of relief.

The second game began with uncharacteristically poor defense by the Eagles. Nine Cougars successively got on base and seven runs scored. Mental lapses and poor throws forced the Eagles to try to dig out of a deep hole. Rhoades scored the only run in the Eagles' first, after an RBI groundout by Morecraft.

The Cougars failed to score in the second. The Eagles drew closer. Danielle Burgrabe and Hunsley each singled and scored on a Hermes sacrifice fly and a Johnson double.

The Cougars moved farther in front, scoring three in the third inning. Trailing 10-3 going into the bottom of the third, the Eagles scored five runs. Alexis Van Hook singled, Mya Roberts and Burgrabe walked, Hunsley hit a two-RBI double, Hermes singled, Johnson doubled, and Curry singled.

Down two going into the final inning, the Eagles held the Cougars scoreless. Needing two runs to stay alive, the Eagles went down in order and were left with their first loss of the season after seven victories to open the season.

In the second game, Curry pitched a complete game and allowed just four walks while recording three strikeouts.

Burgrabe's Eagles are now 7-1 on the season in the Lincoln Park District league.
