[June 16, 2011]  ATLANTA -- Firefighters are trained to fight fires, but it usually is someone else's home they are trying to save. This time Atlanta volunteer Kris Langley and his family lost their home in a Tuesday afternoon blaze.

Official cost totals for damage have not been completed, with initial estimates for fire damage in excess of $30,000. Heat and smoke damage, however, could mean a cost much higher, if the home can be saved at all.

Langley's mother, sister and brother were at home at the time of the fire, but all escaped with no injuries.

Atlanta Fire Chief Ric Cheek said it was the first time in his 33 years on the department that he fought a fire at a department member's home.

The Lincoln Fire Department and Lincoln Rural Fire Protection District were called in to assist with the blaze, which took approximately a half-hour to extinguish. Units from McLean responded, as well from Armington and Mount Hope-Funks Grove. The fire was reported about 2:20 p.m. at the rural Atlanta home on 1450th Street.

The fire appeared to have begun in the utility room area of the single-story, wood-frame home.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause.
